  Elderly Care

Aim:

building a model to enhence the societal role of elderly at the Elderly center in Biet Sahour in a manner that will meet their needs and advocate thier rights.

The Day Center for the Elderly, located in Beit Sahour, is the social focal point of the (approximately) 130 elderly people who regularly participate in its programs. They actively contribute their skills and ideas to running the center by proposing and organizing their own recreational activities, preparing food and fixing up the building. As one of the participating women puts it: "This is not a nursing home, this is our social club!"

The Day Center's activities include:

  • Weekly health check-ups by a nurse, in addition to health awareness programs by doctors and medical students and free flu vaccine and eye check-ups.
  • Physiotherapy.
  • Day trips to the local swimming pool and other places around Beit Sahour.
  • Craft workshops, card games and fitness programs.
  • Community charity dinners for the center.
  • Song and dance.
  • Laundry and food services to generate income for the center.
  • Home visits of the center's participants to their ill friends.
