  School Health Program's Activities

School Health Program completed its national vaccination campaign in schools in occupied Jerusalem which had the title of "Unified National Vaccination Campaign in Jerusalem Governorate". 60 schools in Jerusalem where targeted by this program covering (3,961) students from the first, sixth, and nine grades (out of 4,026 total in these schools). 830 female six graders were covered (out of 836) and 2,037 male and female first graders (out of 2,078) were covered. HWC also extended the campaign for another week and offered the service for another week at Nidal Center for Community and Development in the old city of Jerusalem.

According to Ms. Moyasar Abu Tair/ School health Program director, this program achieved well despite facing several obstacles such as closures and siege imposed by the Israelis and isolating Jerusalem from the West Bank. This caused delays in vaccine availability besides banning medical team from access to schools for service delivery on a regular basis. She also mentioned that in spite of delay in technical and administrative procedures for delivering vaccines, the collaboration and coordination between the Ministry of Health and the Education Department in Jerusalem with schools' administrations and with students and their parents all added to the success of the program.

Preparations started for the new school year: HWC's school Health program concluded students' activities inside Jerusalem schools and work has started on planning for next school year's activities. At the end of activities there have been two central festivals sponsored by Mr. Samir Jabrin the director of Education for Jerusalem governorate. Ms. Nada Obaidat, coordinator for HWC's School Health program, pointed that this year, these two festivals coincided with more than one occasion, such as The Palestinian Child's Day, World Health Day, Education for All campaign, and Vaccination for All campaign. She also complemented on the cooperation of the Education Department within Ministry of Education which contributed to the success of program's diverse activities.

On the other hand, Ms. Moyasar Abu Tair, School Health director, emphasized the importance of such health festivals and their role in activating students and parents role, in raising important health issues of concern to the Palestinian society, and the giving a chance for students' participation in extra curriculum activities that will enhance and empower them to communicate and network with surrounding communities.
